At the request of my adoring children I'm writing down approximations of "wacky meals". I hesitate to actually call them "recipes" because I usually just make whatever creation my refrigerator, freezer, and cabinets will allow. If nothing comes to me I go through my collection of cook books until I find something to jump start the process.
Authentic scrap cooking doesn't involve actually cooking anything from scratch. (Flour/milk roux not withstanding!)
The basics - pepper, salt, flour, sugar
All purpose ingredients I usually have on hand: bread, eggs, margarine, milk, cooking oil
If you don't have these things you're not maximizing your out-to-eat freebies potential: ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, salad dressings
Ingredient I like to keep on hand: cheddar cheese, flour tortillas, potatoes, carrots, onions, frozen vegetables, cream cheese, green onions, dried pinto beans, rice, dried noodles, saltines, a variety of dried herbs, salad dressings, mayonnaise, canned tomatoes, chicken or vegetable broth
Ingredients that can make the measly palatable: 1)fresh garlic, 2)fresh lemons, & my ace in the hole, 3) cooking sherry. These sound a bit gourmet but they're cheap enough to make it worth my while.
Typical leftovers I sneak into the freezer - 1)cooked pasta, 2)baked potatoes, 3)ends of jars of spaghetti sauce, 4) grated cheese, 5) soups, 6) tortilla chip crumbs, 7) bread crusts, 8) stale tortillas, 9) rice, 10)roast chicken picked off the bone.
More later :) -Willow Mom
